| Beach, bonfire & lifeguards (in red shorts) |
Tonight I took Ashley and Brandon, at their request, to the once-a-year (and only time) beach bonfire hosted by the Del Mar Foundation for their annual Spooktacular Beach Bonfire at Powerhouse Park. Kevin had to work late, so he took a reprieve but this beach area is one of our go-to places and since we had never been to this event before, we pre-registered to ensure we could attend the event and have a spot. Apparently since this event involves fire, there is either a fire and/or city ordinances limiting the number of people who can attend at any event, so space is limited.
The night started off with Halloween music playing and then the bonfire was lit up. They had Sargent Stinky Pants (not making that up) come where he told weird stories and a couple of jokes. For example:
Q: What do you call a witch who likes the beach but is afraid of water?
A: A chicken sand-witch.
Q: What did the ghost teacher say to her class?
A: Watch the board and I'll go through it again.
After that, he sang a song (poorly) and then finally, the kids were given wooden sticks to roast their marshmallows. Brandon wasted no time as they had pre-warned us that if we wanted to make smores, we would need to bring our own graham crackers and chocolate since they would provide us the marshmallows. Brandon liked it so much he had 3 smores while Ashley only had 1.
