Symphony Exposed

Kevin managed to win two tickets to the San Diego Symphony at Copley Symphony Hall through his employer and graciously allowed Ashley and I to go for free and have a true girl's night.  Kevin and Brandon held down the fort by staying at home and having brinner (breakfast for dinner), playing Legos, and watching an old San Diego Charger vs. Denver Bronco football game for true male bonding.

The San Diego Symphony actually has a pretty clever concept with their Symphony Exposed Series of telling classical music's "inside stories" to the audience.  Nuvi Mehta, a violinist/conductor, is the presenter and during the session, he tells the story behind the music and composer, in tandem with music interludes to describe the piece.  On this particular night, Richard Strauss was the selected composer and Ashley already was familiar with Strauss through her elementary school instruction, so she was excited to learn more as well as hear the complete piece performed in its entirety which was "Ein Heldenleben" (A Hero's Life).

On our way downtown, Ashley expressed some uncertainty about going to the concert since she had not yet been to this particular location.  Last year, the four of us went to a Fourth of July festivity at the Embarcadaro and saw Marvin Hamlisch which we all enjoyed and have gone to the Hollywood Bowl, but this was the first time that we were had gone to a symphony indoors.  Ashley was enamored with all the ornate details in the symphony hall and have gorgeous it was, which I thought was sweet.  She really did enjoy the night, although she thought it was perhaps a little too long, but said that she would definitely want to go again.  Success!
